UNAA Project
Why?
The UNAA project is a multinational research and idea-generating project examining social equity and mobility, exploring access barriers faced by ger area residents of Ulaanbaatar.
UNAA means “to ride” in Mongolian. It also stands for Ulaanbaatar Accessibility Appraisal.
UNAA aims to understand how ger area residents travel, to build evidence on the types of access residents face, and to develop sustainable and resilient approaches to address the discrepancy in levels of access.
Location
Sukhbaatar, Songinokhairkhan, Bayanzurkh Districts of Ulaanbaatar

Car owners living on a low monthly wage of MNT 420,000 (120 USD) spend over 10% of their income on transportation-related costs
(UNAA, 2020)
Ger district residents spend more than 2 hours per day traveling to and from work, compared to the global average of approximately 40 minutes per day (OECD, 2016).
Our research phase (concluded) consisted of 3 phases: survey, workshops, and trial projects. The first phase of the project was to create a detailed picture of travel behavior and access difficulties experienced by residents. The second phase consisted of a series of community workshops aimed at developing community-engaged solutions addressing those issues. Based on the findings of the survey and workshops, in our final phase we ran a series of route trials understand the demand and challenges of delivery and support community-led transportation services.
